HYROX Age Divisions (Age Group)
Age Groups allow every HYROX athlete to compete in a fair age category, whether you're a young 16-year-old athlete or a 70-year-old competitor.
What is an Age Group division?
An Age Group division is a ranking system that groups participants according to their age bracket. Instead of competing against all thousands of participants in a race, you are ranked only among athletes of your generation.
This system ensures fairer competition: a 55-year-old athlete doesn't have to compare directly with a 25-year-old competitor at the peak of their physical abilities.
HYROX Age Brackets (Solo)
HYROX uses the following age categories for individual competitions:
| Age Bracket | Category |
|---|---|
| 16-24 years | U24 (Under 24) |
| Any age | Open (main category) |
| Any age | Pro (advanced main category) |
| 30-34 years | Age Group 30-34 |
| 35-39 years | Age Group 35-39 |
| 40-44 years | Age Group 40-44 |
| 45-49 years | Age Group 45-49 |
| 50-54 years | Age Group 50-54 |
| 55-59 years | Age Group 55-59 |
| 60-64 years | Age Group 60-64 |
| 65-69 years | Age Group 65-69 |
| 70+ years | Age Group 70+ |
⚠️ Important note: The "Open" and "Pro" categories are not Age Groups per se - they are skill-level categories that include all ages. Open is the entry category with standard weights, while Pro offers heavier weights for experienced athletes.
Age Groups in Doubles and Relay
For team formats (Doubles and Relay), the age rules are slightly different:
Doubles (2 people)
The division is determined by the age of the youngest team member.
Example: If you are 52 and your partner is 47, you will be ranked in Age Group 45-49.
Relay (4 people)
Same principle: the age category corresponds to that of the youngest team member.
With a team of 38, 42, 45 and 51 years old, you will be in Age Group 35-39.
Why Age Groups matter
Age divisions bring several major benefits:
How HYROX determines your Age Group
Your age category is based on the calendar year of the race, not your exact birthday.
Concrete example
You were born on November 15, 1985. For a race in March 2025, you will be 39 during the race but you will be ranked in Age Group 40-44 because you will reach 40 in the year 2025.
Simple rule: It's the age you will reach in the calendar year of the race that determines your category.
Tip: When registering, make sure your date of birth is correct. HYROX automatically calculates your Age Group.
Setting goals by Age Group
Knowing the average performances in your category helps you set realistic goals.
What to expect
Average times naturally vary according to Age Groups. The 30-34 and 35-39 categories generally show the fastest times, while times gradually increase in higher categories.
Don't compare yourself to the overall race times - focus on your ranking within your Age Group.
World ranking by Age Group
HYROX maintains a world ranking by age category. Your performances are recorded and allow you to track your position among all athletes in your age bracket worldwide.
Preparing for your race according to your Age Group
Training must adapt to your age category to optimize your performance while preserving your health.
Key adaptations by age bracket
Focus on training intensity and volume. The body recovers quickly, allowing high workloads.
Balance between intensity and recovery. Training quality takes precedence over quantity. Increased importance of mobility work.
Priority on recovery and injury prevention. More spaced out but well-structured training sessions. Essential strength work to maintain muscle mass.
Our coaching programs are adapted to each age bracket to maximize your performance safely.
